      🔍 Description:

The Pencil Urchin is one of the oldest and most primitive sea urchin species still alive today. Named for its thick, blunt spines that resemble sticks or pencils, it adds a prehistoric, armored look to reef tanks. It’s hardy, long-lived, and slow-moving — but best kept in the right setting.

      Must HaveMust Have

      ✅ Why It’s Interesting:

Hardy survivor: Tolerates a wide range of conditions and fluctuations better than most inverts.

Unique appearance: Its heavy armor and slow, deliberate movement give it an “ancient tank guardian” vibe.

Detritus scavenger: Will consume leftover food and organic matter when available.

Nocturnal activity: Often more active at night, adding variety to tank behavior.

      ⚠️ Important Cautions:

May eat corals: Known to occasionally nip at soft corals, LPS, sponges, or zoanthids — not recommended for coral-heavy displays.

Strong and clumsy: Can knock over frags or move unsecured rockwork.

Not a focused algae grazer: Unlike other urchins, they won’t do much for hair or film algae.
