      DescriptionDescription

Strombus alatus is a robust and attractive gastropod with a thick, spiraled shell and a muscular, hopping foot. Despite the “fighting” name, it is non-aggressive and entirely reef-safe. The term refers more to its shell shape than its behavior.

      Must HaveMust Have

      Benefits in a Reef Aquarium:

Sandbed Cleaner: Constantly sifts through sand, helping to aerate and prevent dead spots.

Algae Eater: Feeds on diatoms and film algae on substrate and rock surfaces.

Detritus Control: Consumes uneaten food and organic waste, helping reduce nutrient buildup.

Tough and Long-lived: Hardy species well suited to established reef tanks.

      Considerations:

Needs open sand areas: Doesn’t do well in tanks that are all rock with little substrate.

May bury itself: It’s normal for them to vanish for days at a time under the sand.

Avoid aggressive tank mates: Predatory crabs and some wrasses may pick at them.

One per 30–50 gallons is a good stocking guideline—they can be surprisingly efficient.
